Former Jamaican star midfielder Theodore Whitmore has been appointed interim head coach of Jamaica’s National Senior Team as it looks ahead to qualification for the 2010 South Africa World Cup.

The Jamaica Football Federation, with Captain Horace Burrell now back at the helm, announced on Saturday that Whitmore was the man taking over from the dismissed Bora Milutinovic.

The 35-year-old Whitmore represented Jamaica at the 1998 World Cup Whitmore will be at the helm of Jamaica when they host two international friendlies at Kingston’s National Stadium against El Salvador and Guatemala on 18 and 21 November, respectively.

Meantime, those two games are being sponsored by Digicel.

On Sunday November 18th Digicel will host the first of the Digicel International Series at the National Arena “the Office” with Jamaica vs Guatemala. Half time entertainment will be provided by Jodian Pantry, second place winner in this year’s Digicel Rising Stars. Then on Wednesday, November 21st Jamaica take on El Salvador with half time entertainment by the 2007 Digicel Rising Stars winner, Romain Virgo.

Taking advantage of the November FIFA window time frame, the Digicel International Series gives Jamaica further opportunities to play against each other as they prepare for FIFA World Cup 2010 qualification.

Speaking at the JFF Digicel Press Conference on Saturday November 10 at the Federation Headquarters, Wayne Miller, Marketing Manager for Digicel Group said: “The Reggae Boyz have our 100% support as they prepare for the road to South Africa. We hope the chance to play more international games will be a major plus in their training programme and we wish Jamaica the best of luck in the matches ahead.”

Digicel is a major contributor to the development of football in Jamaica having been a longstanding sponsor of the Jamaica Football Federation. Earlier this year Digicel also signed a three-year J$10 million contract that will support the ISSA / Pepsi / Digicel Schoolboy football competitions from 2007 to 2009.

As well as the Reggae Boyz Digicel is also a lead sponsor of numerous other football teams across the 23 markets where it operates, such Haiti, Barbados, Guyana as well as El Salvador.

The mobile operator has been the title sponsor of the Digicel Caribbean Cup since 2004 which is hosted in the region every two years involving close to 30 Caribbean countries and is an important qualifier to the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
